Looking out for activities to do this summer; then try surfing. Surprised? If you believe surfing happened only in Hawaii, Australia or Maldives, then check again. India’s 7000-km long coastline has some of the best spots for surfing.

Unlike other adventure activities like skydiving or white water rafting, we have only recently taken to surfing. And this is the best season for surfing. We list some of India’s coolest surfing spots.

Murudeshwar

A popular Hindu pilgrimage, Murudeshwar has achieved the status of the Mecca for surfers in India. While all action stops during monsoon in other parts of India, surfing condition remains ideal even during rains at this Karnataka beach town.

From one foot to 10 feet waves depending on the time of year, Murudeshwar has impressed surfers from the West.

Kanyakumari

The southern-most tip of mainland India, popular for its temples, beaches and history, is fast becoming a surfers’ paradise. One of the windiest places on Earth, the big windy waves of Kanyakumari attracts a lot of surfers.

Kovalam

Situated outside Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, it is probably the best known surf spot in India. Home to coral reefs, Surf at the popular beach resort is decent most of the time.

Kovalam has gigantic waves that surfers love. Local surfers do rent out boards but it is better to bring your own.

Puducherry

Known for its food, culture, monuments and history, the former French colony of Pondicherry or Puducherry as it is officially called, is a good place to surf. A favourite haunt of European tourists, it’s no wonder then that surfing is popular here than in other parts of India.

You will find a few local surfers and a few Europeans who also live permanently at Pondicherry. The French colony gets good waves in February-March.

Andaman Islands

The outer Islands of Andaman Archipelago offer some of the best waves the planet has to offer. Among the most remote surfing places in India, many of the islands are inhabited by primitive tribals. February, March, April and May are the best time for surfing in the Andamans.
