Khajjiar – The Mini Switzerland of India

Khajjiar, a small tourist resort of Chamba, is India own “Mini Switzerland”. It is located at an altitude of 6,500 ft above sea level, it is 24 kms from Dalhousie and 13 kms from Kalatop. The town of Khajjiar has a rich heritage, and many kingdoms have influenced its culture through the years, including the Mughal and Rajput kingdoms.

The town is known for its many meadows and ethereal beauty and is a very popular tourist destination and hotspot. The lush green meadows are surrounded by thick pine and cedar forests. Grazing herds of sheep, goats and other milch cattle present a prefect pastoral scenery. There is a small lake in the center of the saucer shaped meadow which has in it a floating island.

Khajjar by Rail:


Pathankot is the nearest railhead for traveling to Khajjar. The place is situated at a distance of 80 km from the hill resort. Almost all the main stations of India are connected with this railway station. Buses and taxis could be boarded to reach Khajjar from Pathakot. Chandigarh and Delhi are two big cities near Khajjar, you can start your journey from.

 

Khajjar by Air:

The nearest airport is located at Gaggal in Kangra,just 18 kilometers from Khajjiar. Another airport which can be reached easily from here is the airport at Jammu.

Khajjar Weather – Best Time to Visit Khajjar


The region of Khajjiar experiences a temperate climate, Tourists flock to the town of Khajjiar throughout the year, but the best time to visit the place would be during the months between February and April.

Summers in the town of Khajjiar start during the month of March and extend through the months of April, May and June. The general weather during this time is very pleasant and maximum temperatures in Khajjiar will be around thirty nine degrees during this time. The minimum temperature that the region of Khajjiar will experience will be around ten degrees. This is an ideal time to visit the town of Khajjiar, as the weather will be pleasant.


Monsoon in Khajjar during  the months of July, August and September. The streams are rejuvenated by constant rainfall during this time, and the weather during this time is also very inviting. This is also a good time to visit the town of Khajjiar.

Winter in Khajjiar begin from the month of October and continue through the months of November, December, January and February. Temperatures during winter will fall below freezing point, ranging around minus ten degrees

Dauladhar mountains

Dense deodars, pines and lush green meadows are characteristic of Khajjiar. Since Khajjiar is situated at the base of the Dauladhar mountains, the tourists here can get panoramic views of the mountains

Khajinag Temple (Golden Devi Temple)


The town of Khajjiar has been named after its ancient temple of Khajinag. Situated near the famous Khajjiar Lake, The temple stands adorned with a golden dome and spire, which has led to the temple often being called as the Golden Devi temple. It has wooden sanctum with intricate carvings.

Khajjiar Lake


Khajjiar Lake is a small lake, surrounded by saucer-shaped lush green meadow and a floating island. The dense growth of weed called has made its earth spongy. Now the banks stand covered by a thick layer of earth, formed by the years of dust settling down on the weeds.

Golf Course

One of the major attractions of Khajjiar is its huge nine-hole golf course. People visiting the valley of Chamba make sure to visit Khajjiar and enjoy the sport for a while.
